The latest release of the GTS Translation plugin (version 1.1.6) adds support of four new languages, bringing the total number of languages to 12: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Portuguese, Swedish, Hebrew and Finnish.

If you already have a previous release of the GTS Translation plugin you can upgrade to the new version from your WP Admin panel. Go to GTS Settings and check the languages you would like to add.

Localization Settings

This is a new GTS admin panel which displays the WordPress localization settings. The plugin downloads .mo files from the official translation subversion repository.  Those files localize content produced by WP (e.g. the headings over the widgets like “Tags”, “Search”, etc.).  That page lets you see which version of the .mo file is in use because not every WP version has an official release in every language (or there’s a lag).

Bug Fixed

Please note that there was a bug in Version 1.1.5: spaces were not inserted after periods in Russian and Portuguese. Customers who installed the version 1.1.6 of the plugin on April 14 will have seen the same issue in Swedish and Finnish. That was corrected in version 1.1.6.

Google Translator Toolkit (GTT) has become the tool of choice for many users who want to crowdsource or outsource translation projects. The benefits of GTT include multi-user translation memory, glossary, machine translation, spell checking, concordance search and the possibility to get translations from a global translation memory. It is ideal for outsourcing translation online because it is very robust and easy to use. The privacy and security terms of GTT have been revised and don’t require sharing your translations with anyone. And GTT is free.

However, one of the drawbacks in using GTT is that it only supports a few file formats (MS Word, text and HTML). But now thanks to a new module that Multilizer has added to its localization tool, GTT can be effectively used to localize many other files formats. This includes:

The Multilingualweb Pisa workshop came to a close today. It was a good event with lots of information. In participation were people from the European Union, from industry and from academia. Many of the big names were there including Google, Facebook, Microsoft, SDL and Lionbridge.

As I said in my blog post yesterday, I won’t discuss every speaker from Day 2 even though they were all excellent. The conference was widely covered; there was a live video stream and all of the presentations can be found of the web. I will just focus on a few items that I found of interest.

April 1st has passed. And Apple does not own SDL. But I am pleased to report that my April Fools gag was read by about 700 people and was generally very well received. Surprisingly, the story even managed to fool a few people. Proz.com reported it as a genuine news story but pulled it about 15 minutes later.

But now it’s time to get back to serious business. Here are some of the things my readers can look forward to this week:

• I am going to deliver a short talk on Monday April 4 at the Multilingualweb conference in Pisa, Italy. The topic: Website translation using post-edited machine translation and crowdsourcing. You can follow the conference on Twitter (use the hashtag #mlwpisa). I will be blogging about the conference as well.

When we released the GTS translation plugin for WordPress in September 2010 it provided translation from English to French, Italian, German and Spanish. Now we have released a new software version that supports Russian, using the Microsoft Translation API. And we plan on adding more languages very soon.

The GTS translation plugin offers a unique approach to automated translation of blogs and websites that are built using the open-source WordPress CMS. Our plugin provides human translation of content through post-edited machine translation. The plugin offers a complete set of tools for crowdsourcing your own translations by creating your own community of translators. When installed, the GTS translation plugin promotes SEO of websites and blogs. All translated content is cached in the WordPress database so it can be found and indexed by search engines. Permalink URL names are also translated, as are the category and tag pages.
