I had the opportunity to visit the main offices of Systran in Paris last Friday. The visit was graciously hosted by Pierre Bernassau who is the pre-sales manager of Systran in Europe. Pierre and I spent an hour discussing the various activities at Systran. Here are some of the highlights of our conversation.

Systran office at the Grande Arche de la Défense in Paris

Systran is expanding and moving to new offices. It is a shame that they are indeed moving as they are situated in one of the most magnificent office buildings in the world, the Grande Arche de la Défense in Paris. Systran is adding about 15 new development people so next week they will move to a new office in the center of Paris.

Release of Systran Desktop 7. Systran released a new version of their desktop product yesterday (Monday December 13, 2010). The product has many new features including:

  • Toolbar improvements. The Systran toolbar now displays dictionary meanings of words in one click.
  • Document alignment. Performs similarly to Trados WinAlign and has an interactive tool that displays and allows corrections of errors in alignment.
  • Customization Wizard. Scans content of documents and builds a statistical language model based on monolingual analysis.
  • Dictionary Wizard. You can now add rules and dictionary entries to the SDM directly from the translation toolbar. You can also substitute the translation choices made by Systran when more than one word meaning is available.
  • Import improvements. SDM now allows you to import SDL Multiterm termbases and TBX files.

Enterprise Server 7. Sales of Systran’s latest enterprise server are doing well, with numerous new sales in 2010. Customers include several well-known LSPs as well as government agencies (like NATO) and corporations.

The next major release, Enterprise Server 7.4, will include two years of language improvements made by Systran but previously unreleased.

New Languages. Systran has added quite a few new languages including Latvian, Lithuanian, Finnish, Hungarian, Turkish, Rumanian, Czech and Norwegian. Other new language pairs include Japanese to/from Chinese, Chinese to/from Korean, Japanese to/from Korean and several new into English language pairs.

Future Projects. Systran is busy working on new products such as multimedia translation of video and voice; and integration of fuzzy match detection and application into machine translation workflows.
