Last week, I took part in a panel on crowdsourcing at the Israel Translators Association conference. We actually had someone from IBM Israel on the panel talking about their project.

I do not know the name of the Google exec, but I heard this from a reliable source.

Hi Leah, thanks for that information.

You said that “a high-ranking Google executive admitted at a recent conference that although Google collects this information, it has no idea how to use it.” Do you know the name of this Google exec and at which conference he said this? I would be interested to read that quote directly. And about Google, it is clear that they are using the TMs that people upload into the Translator Toolkit to train their SMT.

About IBM: in an interview with CNN (http://bit.ly/6uHvZO) IBM’s translation software chief Salim Roukos states that IBM is going to make some of the N.Fluent derivatives into commercial products.

What you said about Twitter and Facebook may be right but there are other smaller software companies that use translation crowdsourcing for ROI and cost saving. There is an open platform translation system called Pootle which several companies are already using for this purpose.

I completely agree with your assertion that the translation industry has to adapt to a changing reality. However, this list of companies is lacking some factual basis, so it is not representative.

1. A high-ranking Google executive admitted at a recent conference that although Google collects this information, it has no idea how to use it.
2. Both Facebook and Twitter are using crowdsourcing as a marketing technique for engaging users. They are not motivated by either quality or ROI.
3. IBM’s project is entirely internal. It focuses on a vary narrow domain (IBM literature).
