Our hearts go out to the people of Haiti. The mass graves, the piles of rubble, the sights of the tattered and starving survivors are gut wrenching. And we all want to help, each in our own way. Our prayers and thoughts are with you my dear Haitians.

But what insults me, and maybe some of you as well, are the cynical attempts by some companies and bloggers to milk the Haiti disaster for the purpose of financial profit. Haiti? Sure, we’ll donate 50% of the profits in the next month to the Haitians. Please buy our crappy product so we can help the Haitians. Hey my fellow Tweeters, my girlfriend’s off to Haiti to care for the wounded so won’t you please follow me on Twitter? Please people, how cynical can you get?

There is an old saying “charity begins at home.” At any given point in time there are people that need our help. Millions of children in the world don’t have anything to eat. Or have AIDS. Or have parents who are junkies. Or are orphans. They need our help too. And we should be helping them 365/24/7. Not just when it is fashionable. I would like to see the day when the number 1 trending topic on Twitter every day of the year is #charity.
