Top 10 translation and localization Tweeters

My last blog post of top 10 bloggers to watch in 2010 was a success. It was viewed like 150 times in its first day and was retweeted 16 times. So I’m going with another top 10 list: the tweeters in the translation and localization industry that have the most followers. Unfortunately, I can’t put myself in this time. I used www.wefollow.com to get the facts. Here is the list:

1. Trusted Translations- 5,308 followers

2. Spanish Translator – 5,652 followers

3. OneHourTranslation – 4,420 followers

4. Localizations - 3,766 followers

5. CollaborativeTM - 2,160 followers

6. Lionbridge - 1,672 followers

7. Samiris - 1,405 followers

8. Silvia Marques - 1,345 followers

9. NOVALanguages – 1,262 followers

10. TLCtranslation – 1,259 followers

Honorable mention: PC Tools Together is an initiative to enable the community to translate PC software into their native language, and make it available to all users. It has over 21,000 (!!!) followers.

I think the follower/following ratio is much more meaningful.

e.g. @anildash has 305,000 followers but only follows 556 people himself. Interestingly he has made the point that having a lot of followers has very little value.

A random test I did of two on the list showed very different results in Klout, which attempts to measure influence.

Number 8 has a Klout rating of 45 and Number 1 has a Klout rating of 8.

Egads, I’ll have to disagree with Kirti regarding the ratio! Because of auto-following scripts, spam-follow-bots, Tweetdeck & other 3rd party grouping tools, and the rise of lists, a 1:1 ratio with followers is no longer indicative of whether someone is listening or whether the followers are true. There’s also been long debates over when/why one should follow or not follow. Google “why I am not following you” for a sample or see this one debate http://ariwriter.com/why-i-am-or-not-following-you-on-twitter/

But high numbers still mean someone’s working their butt off to raise the visibility of their company, the industry and its news. I appreciate this list for introducing me to those trendsetters.

This reminds me of a joke: an embattled married couple comes to a marriage counselor and after hearing the wife’s side tells her “you’re right.” Then after hearing the husband’s side he tells him “you’re right.” The marriage counselor’s secretary, who was eavesdropping on the discussion says “how can they both be right?” To which the marriage counselor answers “”you’re also right.”

But really you are both correct. Having a high number of followers is significant, as it means that your tweets are read by many. You have created a buzz around your idea/product/image which you can use to promote whatever it is you are promoting. But having a high number of followers due to spamming and other tech tricks is cheating. These kinds of tweeters are using the Internet to get rich quick; they create no real value and I personally block them when they try and follow me. I don’t think that this applies to tweeters in the translation and localization world.
